A moving image “is a real thing and as a real thing it is not imitation. It does not reflect on life, it embodies the life of the mind.” Ernie Gehr
TVs emit light out, onto the onlooker and into the room. TVs have become our companion, like an imaginary friend that accompanies us in our daily life.
Images leave a retinal impression, no matter how quickly, or carelessly, we glance at them. Images fabricated for distribution follow certain representational codes. An image intended for advertisement won’t look the same as and image intended for news, documentation or art. These codes allow us to determine the nature of an image quasi instantly. Shape, layout and composition (topology) of a newly perceived image are matched for pattern against a huge catalogue of dormant memories of ads, dreams, mental images, movies, TV shows and sensations stored in our brains.
For his show “Topologies” at AVA, Antoine Catala will create new TV sculptures – moving image transponders. In these new works, TV images, as independent entities, will travel in other TV images’ spaces and times, along with the viewers.
